The Challenge

The main obstacle on Constellation was delivering 171 invisible VFX shots under extreme time pressure and short turnarounds. Invisible work leaves zero room for error, as any synthetic-looking breath or screen insert instantly breaks the reality of the show. With no time for heavy 3D pipelines, we had to execute delicate 2D compositing at high speed without compromising seamless quality.

Our Approach

For our work on Constellation, the primary objective was delivering 171 invisible VFX shots that supported the story's realism without drawing attention to themselves. The work centered on practical details like visible cold-weather breath, screen inserts across various devices, and delicate glass reflections. To keep the visual style grounded, our team favored a compositing-heavy 2D approach rather than relying on heavy 3D builds.

To integrate interactive elements like the Apple Watch interface, we shot our own live-action references and reflection elements in-house. Capturing real-world light interaction on physical screens gave our compositors organic highlights and glass glare to blend seamlessly into the main plates. This practical foundation made device screens look embedded in the scene's lighting rather than digitally slapped on.

By focusing on a refined 2D workflow, we maintained total control over subtle atmospheric elements like breath and delicate screen reflections. This practical-first strategy allowed us to execute a high volume of shots efficiently while ensuring every effect remained completely invisible to the audience.
